The Steps to Earn your PADI Advance Open Water Certification

During your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, you will:

Complete five Adventure Dives. Two of these dives are required for all participants, and these dives are the following:

Deep Adventure Dive

On the Deep Adventure Dive, you will complete a dive beyond the 18/60' limit of your Open Water Course, generally to a maximum depth of 30m/100' or 21m/70" for the Junior Advanced Open Water Course.

Underwater Navigation

You will complete the Underwater Navigation Dive from shore. During this dive, you will improve your underwater navigation skills by using your compass and natural landmarks.

You will then get to choose three more adventure dives of your choice. You have many options for these dives,  such as Night Diver,  Wreck Diver, Search and Recovery, Drift Diver, or even Enriched Air Nitrox Diver.

As you read the chapters specific to the Adventure Dives you choose, you will also learn about:

Practical aspects of deep diving
Physiological effects of deeper scuba diving.
More ways to use your underwater compass
How to navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks, and time
How to better use your dive computer and electronic Recreational Dive PlannerTM (eRDPTM)
And much, much more, depending on the Adventure Dives you choose

You will also complete the "Thinking Like a Diver" section of the Advanced Open Water Manal, where you will learn about four central techniques of diving, which are:

Primary and secondary dive objectives
Increasing your situational awareness
How to handle task loading
Better habits to be a good diver
